About Richard W Dillon
Dillon splits his time between studios in St. Paul, Minnesota and Bayfield, Wisconsin. He holds a BA in Studio Arts from the University of Minnesota.
He focuses most of his time on painting, (with a little sculpture thrown in.) His work and art style is considered Post Modern and or Expressionistic. Dillon says; "My byline is Art with a Grim because I try to infuse humor in much of my work, but some is also quite serious."
He says his subject matter is usually a commentary on personal impressions, US symbolism, travels and his love of Lake Superior and sailing. He sometimes includes poems or poetic word elements. A few paintings also have 3D modeling.
The artist that have most influenced Dillon are Picasso, Matisse, Kandinsky and American artists such as Rivera, Rauschenberg, Johns and Dines. Dillon's work also reflects his Irish roots and has some connection to distant relatives in Ireland.
"I feel like I finally have a real body of work to build on within current themes of Ireland, Sailing and general Pop Art. My work ranges from realistic to near abstract."
Dillon shares St. Paul studio space with some other very talented artist friends including Lanny Ross, Paul Rolfes, Phil Carlton and Ben Kelley.
Dillon has entered juried shows in the Midwest and recently had a show with the Hampden Artists Group at the Echo Gallery in St. Paul. His work has been in several galleries in Wisconsin, Bates art bar, Bayfield and Salmagundi, Ashland.
